Over-The-Counter pain medications are NOT the simple solutions for chronic pain, you may think. Like “Doctor Prescribed” meds, OTC’s also come with a complicated dark side that exposes some of the very problematic health issues some of us are or may yet to experience on a chronic (recurring/on going) level and haven’t had the slightest idea why. Although it may or may not require a prescription, that doesn’t make it safe. Here’s what you should know about some commonly used pain relievers.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is intended to help reduce fever but can damage the liver. Add alcohol while taking acetaminophen, throws liver damage potential, and may induce a bleeding disorder if you take warfarin (Coumadin).
The maximum daily dose for the average healthy adult of 4,000 milligrams (mg) per day, for short-term use, and even at lower doses than that, are still toxic to the liver. “It’s in so many different kinds of medications that you may inadvertently take too much,” warns Dr. Ross.
Such examples include OTC remedies for pain, sleep, or cold symptoms.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen (Aleve), or aspirin, are also OTCs, and available in stronger doses by prescription.
NSAIDs are intended to reduce fever and pain by reducing inflammation.

Anticonvulsant medication is often prescribed for nerve pain. “It’s less risky than NSAIDs and other synthetics, but it has its own risks, such as sedation, cognitive impairment, dizziness, and falls,” says Dr. Ross.

Otherwise, use the lowest dose possible for the shortest amount of time, and avoid NSAIDs once you reach age 60. “Above 60, the data show significant risks, and they increase by decade,” says Dr. Ross.
